Build vocabulary by making connections
Lingo Cascade is a free word-sorting game designed for active vocabulary practice. Instead of reading the same list repeatedly, you make a decision about every card: what the word means, which topic it belongs to and whether you need help.
Why group words by topic?
Vocabulary becomes easier to retrieve when words are connected to a meaningful situation. A group such as Food, Travel or Weather gives each new word a useful context and creates links with words you already know.
The game asks you to recognise these links yourself. That small act of classification turns passive reading into an active memory task.
Use active recall before translation
Try to place a card before revealing its translation. Even an uncertain guess exercises recall. If you get stuck, reveal the translation, say the word aloud and then place it in the correct group.
Translations are help, not a test result. Using them deliberately is more useful than hiding them completely or showing every answer immediately.
Practise pronunciation
The pronunciation control lets you hear a word in the language you are learning. Listen once, repeat it slowly, then repeat it again at a natural speed.
Sound and meaning reinforce each other. A short spoken repetition during play can make a word easier to recognise later in conversation.
Choose an appropriate level
Beginner games focus on concrete, high-frequency vocabulary. Intermediate games introduce broader everyday and professional topics. Advanced games include academic and specialised language.
Choose a level where most cards are understandable but several still require thought. If every card is obvious, move up; if every move requires translation, step back temporarily.
A simple daily routine
One complete game is enough for a focused practice session. Before playing, choose one language and level. During the game, listen to unfamiliar words and save the most useful ones. After finishing, review only the words that caused difficulty.
- Play one short game without rushing.
- Say unfamiliar words aloud.
- Reveal translations only after trying to recall the meaning.
- Return to saved words on another day.
For parents and teachers
Children’s mode uses simpler vocabulary, larger cards and picture clues. An adult can ask the learner to name the object, repeat the word and explain why it belongs to a topic.
Lingo Cascade is a practice activity, not a replacement for conversation, reading or instruction. It works best as one varied part of a broader learning routine.
